⚠ Rust!

I'm sure Greg did a whole video segment about the drain holes that needed to be drilled into the roll bars and the high beam light switch, but I found about 5 cups of water when drilling a hole in the frame for wiring my license plate lights. It's a section of squared tubular frame about 2"x3" x 8" long near the rear of my PMT. There are two bolts on the top of it where the driver and front passenger seat restraints bolt down. It appears that is where the moisture is getting in, especially if one of those bolts was missing.

That is something worth checking out.
I doubt these are supposed to be ballast tanks.

This area doesn't seem to be in that bad of shape thanks to the shrouds and large cluster of hoses and wires.



Removing those exposes some areas of concern.
Arrows show area und the air compressor, The hole allowing room for mounting bracket for the Haldex Purest system, and the square hole for the tail light assembly.



That hole behind the Purest mount leads into a short portion of frame tube. This photo was taken after I removed about two cups of dried mud and rust from the frame tube. Before reinstalling the bracket I applied RTV gasket maker between the plate and the body around the hole to keep that from happening again.



The seal around the light assemblies trap mud and water that easily passes through the square hole in the body which is about 1/4" larger than the square wire assembly on the back of the tail light.



I filled that space with adhesive backed high density foam before reinstalling.

How I've been treating these issues.

I start with wire brushing the loose rust and grime. Then spray it down with a 50/50 water and LA Totally Awesome degreaser.



Then follow that up with Rust Kutter. Wait 24 hours for that to do it's thing. Apply a second coat if needed.



Then another dose of the water/LA Totally Awesome to neutralize the acidic Rust Kutter. Allow to dry then apply another dose to any shiny areas.

I've been painting with 2 coats Ace Hardware Stop Rust Primer, 4 coats Rust-Oleum Deep Forest Green Camo 2X paint, then 2 coats Krylon COLORmaxx flat crystal clear finish. Yes, it's a bit darker, but treating rust does require painting and CARC green is ridiculously expensive.
